Association of South East Town Unions (ASETU), has challenged governors of the zone to initiate programmes that would tackle unemployment with a view to curbing violent crimes among youths in the region. Their presidents in a 15-point communique issued at the end of the association’s first security and economic summit held in Enugu at the weekend, challenged governors of the five south-east state on job creation and security.

The association also called on wealthy Igbo indigenes to embark on a process of investing in the zone so that such investments would create job opportunities and curb youth restiveness, stressing that the high rate of violent crimes and youth restiveness in the South East could be attributed to “obvious paucity of employment opportunities in the zone.

They said: “To this end, we urge state governments in the South- East to prioritise and facilitate job creation in the zone through deliberate actions and sound economic roadmap, especially agro-industrial interventions that will gainfully engage the teeming youth population in the zone.

“Igbo sons and daughters with businesses outside Igboland should begin the process of repatriating their investment back home to open up opportunities and contribute to addressing the unemployment crisis and the attendant security challenges in the zone.”
