Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla in talks to re-join Villarreal after 18 months of injury
Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla is having talks with Villarreal about making a return to his former club.

Cazorla, 33, has endured an injury-plagued 18 months and feared he would never play again because of a long running Achilles problem.

But Villarreal are now interested in signing him and taking him for pre-season training this summer, although his future is yet to decided.

It was reported on Spanish TV that “it is all but official” that Cazorla will return to the club where he started and made his debut 15 years ago.

TV reporter Mónica Marchante told viewers: “It is all-but-official that, although it has not all been completely confirmed by the club, Santi Cazorla will spend pre-season next season – well, this July as we are already there – with Villarreal.”

While Villarreal have not confirmed it, Marchante said it in front of club ambassador Marcos Senna and she later clarified that they were in “advanced negotiations.”

Cazorla had stepped up his training in recent weeks and harboured dreams of playing before the end of the season.

But Cazorla’s contract expires this summer and it is unlikely he will stay at Arsenal to be a squad player as the injury was so bad it saw him need a skin graft from his arm to repair the area around the Achilles and ankle.

Cazorla will go down as one of Arsenal’s best recent players and the injury has been a huge factor in their recent drop in fortunes.

It has been reported that Mikel Arteta wanted him as part of his Arsenal coaching set-up but Cazorla has maintained that his priority has been to carry on playing.
